Baduarius (Scythia)

Baduarius was a Byzantine general who served Justinian I (reigned 527-565 ) in the province of Scythia Minor. The name may be of Germanic origin.

Baduarius is mentioned in the works of John Malalas, John of Nikiu, Theophanes and Georgios Kedrenos. In Greek is his rank as " Stratelates of Scythia " means, probably, he was Master of the Soldiers. In the year 528 Baduarius and Godilas waged a campaign of Odessus (today's Varna ) against the Huns in the Crimea. Under her Khan Mougel the Huns had some coastal areas of the Black Sea, which were under East Roman rule looted.

Also 528 Baduarius is recognized as Dux Scythiae. He and Justin, Dux of Moesia Secunda, their forces united in the fight against enemy invaders. John Malalas it considers " Huns ", Theophanes they identified as Bulgarians, Scythia and Moesia raided. The battle against these invaders was lost for the Eastern Romans. Justin was killed and the invaders penetrated now into Thrace. Justin has been replaced by Konstantiolos.

Although the defense efforts of the Eastern Romans continued to run, Baduarius is no longer mentioned as part of what is perhaps explainable by that further events to wegverlagerte of Scythia Minor. His fate is unknown. A younger Baduarius appears in the reign of Justin II (reigned 565-578 ).
