Bakhtrioni (Georgian ბახტრიონი; bɑχtrɪɔnɪ ) is a former fortress in the historic province of Kakheti in Georgia, today in the municipality Akhmeta. The ruins of the fort located on the left high bank of the river opposite the mouth of the Alazani Ilto and near the town of Akhmeta.

History

The fortress was built in the 17th century on the orders of the Persian Shah Abbas II. The fort derives its name Bakhtrioni ago by a village located in the vicinity, also the name of the major Georgian noble family Bachtaraschwili refers to this Bakhtrioni.

In 1659, an uprising against the Kizilbaschen took place in Kakheti, this year won the Georgians the important battle of Bakhtrioni. During the battle, the fortress was almost completely destroyed and was then returned as a ruin.

Specifications

The fortress Bakhtrioni has a triangular ground plan and had several towers that still exist as ruins. From the western tower are still two floors, the lower floor had a door on the north wall, east wall niches and some in the middle of a fireplace. In the area of the fortress ruins of other buildings could be exposed. In the eastern part still a small church built of stones is without apse, its entrance is located on the southern wall and window openings remained in the eastern and western walls. This church is the oldest part of the building dates back to the late Middle Ages. The important as a historical and cultural monument complex is under forest and scrub, a tourist compliance does not occur.
