Balabanovo, Kaluga Oblast

Balabanovo (Russian Балабаново ) is a city in Kaluga Oblast (Russia) with 26,337 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 75 km northeast of the Oblasthauptstadt Kaluga on the left bank of the Protva, a left tributary of the opening into the Volga River Oka.

History

A village Balabanovo was first mentioned in the 17th century.

After the railroad was built from about 1900 a larger station settlement, which was awarded in 1935 the status of an urban-type settlement and 1972, the city law.

Culture and sights

In the valley of the nearby river Istja are the remains of an ironworks from the 18th century.

Economy and infrastructure

In Balabanovo are the important match factory Plitspitschprom (formerly giant ) and a packaging factory of the Swedish-Finnish Stora Enso.

The town lies on the railway line opened in 1899 Moscow - Bryansk - Kiev ( kilometer 96).

By Balabanovo leads the M3 highway Moscow - Bryansk - Ukrainian border ( from there the direction of Kiev ), which is here crossed by the Great Moscow Ring A108.
