Balassi Institute

Balassi Institute (Hungarian Balassi Intézet ) is a Hungarian Cultural Institute, the promotion of Hungarian language and culture dedicated to. The patron of the Institute is the Hungarian poet Bálint Balassa (1554-1594), considered the creator of the modern Hungarian. Headquarters of the Institute is Budapest.

Main tasks of the Institute are to support Hungarian speakers abroad, such as the Hungarian minorities in neighboring countries. Dst Institute offers advanced training for Hungarian teachers and provides teaching materials available. Moreover, the Institute decreases the nationally recognized Hungarian- language tests. To promote Hungarian in Germany, the Institute awards scholarships for Hungarian- language courses.

The Institute promotes the Hungarian Studies (Hungary Research ) abroad by networking the existing mostly at universities Hungarian centers. The Institute shall publish in their own official publications and maintains its own library. In addition, it supports the development of hungary related libraries abroad. The Institute organizes conferences, cultural events and exhibitions on the Hungarian language and culture.

History

The institute was founded on 1 January 2002, with headquarters in Budapest. The aim was to create a national cultural institution such as the Goethe Institute or the British Council. The Institute grew out of the Hungarian language institute, founded in 1989 and the International Hungarologischen center existed for nearly 50 years.
