Ballyhaunis

Ballyhaunis ( Irish: Béal Átha hAmhnais ) is a town in Ireland. It lies in the east of County Mayo in the province of Connacht, at the junction of N60 and N83. In the town of 3,008 inhabitants ( 2011).

History

The Kiltullagh Hill is a limestone hill south-east of Ballyhaunis, were made on the Iron Age and early Christian finds. In 1348 the monastery of St. Mary's Abbey was founded in the Augustinian Order. In its vicinity are the town where the River Clare springs developed.

Traffic

Ballyhaunis is located at the intersection of national roads N60 ( Castlebar - Roscommon ) and N83 ( Tuam - Ballyhaunis ( Charlestown ) ). On 1 October 1861, the city received a railroad connection to the main Dublin- Westport.
