Balsamgau

The Balsamgau, also called Gau Balcsem or Balsamer country, was a medieval Gaugrafschaft in the southern half of the later Altmark. He lay north of Magdeburg between the rivers Elbe and gentleness. In 1070 the Gaugraf Wiprecht exchanged his hereditary dominion Balsamgau with the Margrave Udo II against the castle Groitzsch in Easter country. In more recent research, the actual and contemporary existence of a " Balsamgaus " but doubted and it is believed that this is a re-creation Gau from the 12th or 13th century.
