Baltasar Lopes da Silva

Baltasar Lopes da Silva ( born April 23, 1907 in Caleijão, São Nicolau, † May 28, 1989 in São Vicente ) was a Cape Verdean poet and author.

He wrote both in Portuguese and in kapverdischem Creole. He was in the first half of the 20th century next to Jorge Barbosa and Manuel Lopes to the first Cape Verdean writers who were primarily influenced by literary movements in Brazil. Initially published da Silva poems and short stories in the magazine Claridade, 1947, he wrote his only novel Chiquinho, considered groundbreaking for the Cape Verdean literature. He also published works under the pseudonym Osvaldo Alcântara.
