Baranów Sandomierski

Baranów Sandomierski [ baranuf sandɔm ɛrsci ʲ ] is a city in the powiat Tarnobrzeski in the Subcarpathian Voivodeship, Poland. It is the seat of the homonymous urban and rural municipality ( gmina miejsko - wiejska ).

Geography

Baranów Sandomierski about 123 km north-east of Krakow and 13 km south-west of Tarnobrzeg on the Vistula.

History

The first written mention of the village dates back to the year 1135, as Bolesław the Wry-mouthed place officially founded. 1354 the place of Casimir the Great was awarded city rights by the Magdeburg Law. In the following years the town developed mainly by the grain trade. End of the 16th century drew the craft in the city. Especially cloth and shoes were produced. The castle was built during this period following the example of the Wawel Royal Castle in Cracow. 1628 was a printing company. Around 1770 there were about 1200 people in the place. During the third partition of Poland was Baranów Sandomierski part of Austria.

1896-1934 was the place for 38 years before the Lost City right back. 1933 gave the Home Office the place its current coat of arms.

On 8 and 9 September 1939 took place heavy rearguard action between the Polish Army " Cracow " and the German army at the bridge over the Vistula. During the German occupation all the Jews of the village were deported. In July 1944, the Red Army established a bridgehead on the Vistula. At the end of the Second World War the city was half destroyed.

After 1945

From 1975 - 1998 the village belonged to the province Tarnobrzeg.

Name

The name Baranów probably goes back to the sheep farming (Polish Baran ), which was operated in the 12th century here.

The municipality has an areal extent of 121.86 km ². 60 % of its territory is used for agriculture, 21 % is covered by forest.
