Barbara McDougall

Barbara Jean McDougall PC OC ( Birth Name: Barbara Jean Leaman, born November 12, 1937 in Toronto, Ontario ) is a former Canadian politician of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada ( Tories ).

Biography

After schooling McDougall studied political science and economics at the University of Toronto and graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA ) from. She began her political career as a candidate of the federal Progressive Conservative Party of Canada in 1984 with the election of deputies of the lower house, where she was employed as a representative of the constituency of St. Paul's until 1993.

Immediately after the election victory of the Tories, she was also appointed in September 1984 by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney to the Minister of State Treasury. Then she was between 1986 and 1988 not only Minister of State for Privatisation, but also from 1986 to 1988, Minister responsible for the Status of Women.

On March 31, 1988, she was appointed by Mulroney as Minister of Employment and Immigration in the Cabinet, and held this office until 20 April 1991. During this time she was between 1988 and 1990 still responsible Minister for the Status of Women and in 1990 acting for some time Minister of State for Youth. As part of a Cabinet reshuffle Prime Minister Mulroney appointed her on 21 April 1991 as the successor to Joe Clark for Secretary of State. This position she held until the end of Mulroney's term of office on 24 June 1993.

At the general election in 1993 lost Barbara McDougall who was also a member of the Canadian Privy Council, its mandate in parliament, then retired from politics and moved to the private sector. She was not only an advisor to the law firm Aird & Bells in Toronto, but between 1999 and 2008 also director of Scotiabank. Most recently, she was from October 2004 to March 2010 Member of the Board of Imperial Tobacco Canada. After she was 2007 Board Member of the International Development Research Centre ( IDRC ) in January, she's since December 2007, Chief Executive Officer of this research center.

For her achievements, she was appointed an Officer of the Order in 2000 of Canada.
