Barbaste

Barbaste is a municipality with 1505 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in France, in the department of Lot- et- Garonne in the Aquitaine region.

Geography

The city is situated on the banks of the river Gélise which opens into Lavardac in the Baise. Barbaste located in Buzet wine region.

History

  • On the Ténarèze, a Gallo-Roman road between the Pyrenees and the Garonne, a Romanesque ten arches built over the Gélise in the 12th century.
  • A century later a fortified with towers water mill was built by the local lords, before it was bought in 1308 by the family d' Albret. It has a square base of 15 meters on each side and is flanked by four crenellated towers of about 29 square meters. Since it is close to the bridge, it was also used as a fortress for the toll collection. In the 16th and 17th centuries it was more castle as a mill and was often by the French king Henri IV, who emerged from the family d' Albret and owner of the mill was visited in transit and on the hunt. Beginning of the 19th century it was sold and the new owners built in 1821, Maison Aunac, a magnificent residence, added.
