Lavardac

Lavardac is a municipality with 2251 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in France, in the department of Lot- et- Garonne in the Aquitaine region.

Geography

The city is situated on the banks of the River Baise, at the mouth of his left tributary Gélise. Lavardac located in Buzet wine region.

History

  • In Gallo -Roman times here was a Roman military camp on the Ténarèze, a road between the Garonne and the Pyrenees.
  • 1268 Lavardac was founded as a bastide of Alphonse of Poitiers.
  • Successively ruled by French and English barons, Lavardac was besieged and destroyed in 1621 by the Duke of Mayenne during the religious wars.
  • Due to the thriving port Lavardac was on 15 - 19th Century seat of the shipping companies on the Baise that ensured the transport of the goods to Bordeaux.
