Barcola
Barcola is a suburb of the northern Italian city of Trieste, which extends along the coast of the Gulf of Trieste. The waterfront of Barcola serves as a recreation area and beach town of Trieste.
Location and management
Barcola is located between the suburbs and the Miramare Trieste district Roiano. Together with Grignano, Miramare, Gretta, Roiano, Scorcola, Cologna and a part of Guardiella forms Barcola the administrative district of the municipality of Trieste 3 ( circoscrizione III).
History
Already at the time of the Roman Empire was on the field of Barcola a fishing village called Vallicula ( small valley ). Be the remains of Roman villas richly decorated suspect Barcola was a popular resort by the Romans.
However, the fishing dominated the area until the 19th century. Attractions
In the center is the church of San Bartolomeo, which was built in 1785 and dedicated to St. Bartholomew.
Events
Every year in early October in Trieste instead of the sailing regatta Barcolana whose route includes a discussion along the seaside promenade of Barcola.
