Barisal

Division

Barisal ( Bengali: বরিশাল, Barisal, Barisal also ) is a city in the south of Bangladesh, about 70 km away from the Bengal coast. The more than 230,000 inhabitants, is the seat of administration of the same division and the district of the same name.

Comprised of 30 wards ( districts ) Barisal was until 1957 an independent municipality ( municipality ).

Geography

Barisal is located on the Ganges delta, to a branch of the river Kirtonkhola. Due to the presence of water Barisal of Kazi Nazrul Islam, the national poet of Bangladesh, Venice was called the Orient. Rivers such as Arial Khan, Tushkhali, Gabkhan and Katcha flow through the Greater Barisal.

The distance to Dhaka is 275 km by car, by boat 117 km.

The Balam rice is grown here, is the most famous in the country. The city has an airport ( IATA code: BZL ).
