Barisan of Ibelin

Barisan of Ibelin († 1150 ) was an important figure in the Kingdom of Jerusalem and the ancestor of the Ibelin family. His name was also " Balian " pronounced, he even referred to as Balian the Elder.

Life

Barisan probably originated in northern Italy, but it is about his life before he appeared in 1115 as a constable of the county of Jaffa, nothing is known. 1134, as rebel Hugh II of Le Puiset, the Count of Jaffa, against King Fulk to Barisan presented to the King's side and soon acquired an important role in the courtyard. Between 1134 and 1141 he was appointed master of the newly built Castle Ibelin, who was in the county of Jaffa Jaffa between itself and the Fort Ashkelon, the latter still in the possession of the Fatimids. He has also received the castle and lordship Mirabel, which was separated from the county of Jaffa. 1148 Barisan inherited by marriage to Helvis, the daughter of Baldwin of Ramla, the rule of Ramla. In the same year he took part in the discussion of the leader of the Second Crusade in Acre, in the attack on Damascus was decided.

With Helvis of Ramla Barisan had three sons and two daughters:

  • Barisan the Younger ( also Balian, † 1193 ),
  • Ermengarde († 1160/67 ), ⚭ Elinard of Bures, Prince of Galilee
  • Stephanie ( † after 1167 ).

After his death the rule of Ibelin passed to his son Hugo, his widow married Manasseh Helvis of Hierges, the constable of Jerusalem, together they stopped with the dominions Ramla and Mirabel to 1152 and then Hugo left.
