Manasses of Hierges

Manasseh of Hierges (* 11th or 12th century in Saint -Gérard, † January 8, 1176 in Saint -Gérard ) was constable in the Kingdom of Jerusalem, as well as lord of Ramla and Mirabel.

Origin

His father was the Crusaders Heri Fire III. of Hierges († 1114 ), Lord of Hierges in the Ardennes. His mother was Hodierna of Rethel, the sister of King Baldwin II of Jerusalem. By the second marriage of his mother was Roger from the Principate († 1119 ), Regent of Antioch, his stepfather.

Life

Manasseh came to Jerusalem in 1140 and was appointed there by his cousin, Queen Melisende to the constable. As a constable he commanded the army and was, especially after the death of King Fulk husband Melis end 1143 the most important officials of the kingdom.

In 1144 he led the army to the relief of the besieged city of Edessa, the city had already fallen but to Zengi when he arrived. In response to the case of Edessa met in 1148, the Second Crusade to the Holy Land a. Manasseh was present at the Council of Acre, where the siege of Damascus was decided that failed miserably and after which the crusade was canceled.

Around 1150 he married his first wife, Helvis of Ramla, the widow of Barisan of Ibelin. From the right of his wife, he was henceforth lord of Ramla and Mirabel and thus controlled large parts of southern Palestine, with the exception of the rule of Ibelin, where Helvis ' son from his first marriage, there was Hugh of Ibelin. The increase in power seems to have gained Manasseh introduced the distrust of long-established barons of the kingdom.

In the looming power struggle between Queen Melisende and her son Baldwin III. Manasseh stood firmly on the side Melis end. When Baldwin III. 1152 the undivided government violence claimed caused Melisende first a division of the country, Melisende of Jerusalem and Nablus in the south and Baldwin Acre and Tyre received in the north. Baldwin then appointed its own constable, Humphrey II of Toron, drew many of the local barons to his side and invaded the south. He forced Manasseh in his castle Mirabel to task and captured Jerusalem by Melisende. Manasseh was exiled and replaced as constable by Humphrey.

In the dominions Ramla and Mirabel his stepson Hugh of Ibelin took control.

Manasseh returned to his homeland. There he married after the death of his first wife, Alix Chiny ( † after 1177 ), daughter of Albert I, Count of Chiny (House Chiny ). Later he entered the Benedictine monastery in Saint -Gérard Brogne ( near Namur ), where he died in 1176.
