Barmer (Hindi: बाड़मेर, Barmer ) is a city in the western Indian state of Rajasthan. It has 83 517 inhabitants and is located in the Tehsil of the same name in the same district.

Origin of the name

The name Barmer is derived from the ruler Bahada Rao or Bar Rao who is said to have founded the city in the 13th century. At that time the city was called Bahadamer ( " hill fortress of Bahada ").

Demography

Of the 83 517 inhabitants, 53.98 % male and 46.02 % are female. The literacy rate is 66.5 % ( 59.5 % is Indian average). About 15 % of the population were 6 years old or younger.
