Barmer district
Barmer (Hindi: बाड़मेर, Barmer ) is a district in the western Indian state of Rajasthan. It is located in western Rajasthan in the Thar Desert and is bordered by Pakistan. The area is 28,387 km ², the population is 1,964,835 ( 2001). Administrative center is the city.
Population
The district Barmer is rural, only about 7.4 % of the population lives in cities. 52.7 % of the population are men. 58.99 % of the population can read and write, 72.76 % for males, 43.45 % in women.
The majority of the inhabitants belonging to Hinduism ( 86.27 %), 11.8% are Muslims, the Jainism plays only a minor role with 1.8%.
The most common languages are Rajasthani, Hindi and English.
Climate and Nature
The district Barmer is located in the Thar Desert. The lowest temperatures are in January and vary between about 10 ° C to 26 ° C, summer temperatures up to 43 ° C frequently (May). The annual rainfall averages 280 mm, but with monsoon -related fluctuation. Stronger monsoon rains can quickly lead to flooding, as was the case in 2006, where 103 people lost their lives. As a result of the flooding, it may also lead to outbreaks of malaria.
The largest river is the Luni, which leads brackish water.
