Barnard Castle

Barnard Castle is the name of a castle and the surrounding town in northern England County Durham. It is located north of the River Tees, opposite Startforth. Apart from the castle ruins and the Bowes Museum and the historic old town is one of the attractions of Barnard Castle.

History

The castle was built by the Normans shortly after the conquest of the region, however, experienced the greatest importance under Bernard de Bailleul in the second half of the twelfth century. The castle remained in the possession of the Balliol family, whose best-known and most important member John Balliol was King of Scotland.
