Baron de Clifford

Baron de Clifford is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of England, which is now run by the Russell family.

Award

The title was created in 1299 for Robert de Clifford. He was later the Earl Marshal of England, and fell in 1314 at the Battle of Bannockburn.

As with many ancient baronies of the Peerage of England, the creation was not by appointment of a person to Peer ( letters patent ), but by the fact that the person was asked to take a seat in the Upper House ( Writ of Summons ). A special feature of these baronies by writ is that they can also be inherited in the female line, if no children are present. However applies between several sisters - unlike brothers - not the principle of primogeniture. Since the title can not be shared or held in common but the title rests if no sons, but daughters are more available ( falls into Abeyance ). Everyone can then jointly entitled to request the termination of the suspension at the crown. So the title rested, for example, from 1605 to 1649.

More titles

The eleventh Baron was raised in 1525 to the Earl of Cumberland. After the death of the third Earl, the thirteenth Baron, was this title that could be inherited only in the male line, to the younger brother of the Earl.

The fifteenth Baron led, as it fell to the barony, already the title of Earl of Thanet. Although the sixth Earl had five daughters but no son. While the barony rested after his death, the earldom fell to a nephew.

The twenty-third Baron, who inherited the title from his mother, his father was a grandson of John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford. Since the title has since been inherited only in the male line, the respective Baron stands in the succession of the title Duke of Bedford, together with subordinate dignities.
