Baron Dufferin and Claneboye

Baron Dufferin and Claneboye is a hereditary British title of nobility in the Peerage of Ireland, named after the Clandeboye estate in Bangor in Northern Ireland, which is supported by the Blackwood family.

Award

The title was awarded to Dorcas Blackwood in 1800, the wife of the recently deceased Sir John Blackwood, 2nd Baronet of Killyleagh. The Barony should be given to this because of his support of the Act of Union in 1800.

Baronetcies

The father of the husband of the first Baroness had been a baronet in 1763, of Killyleagh, levied. The Baron leads, as far as he has demonstrated the successor to the competent bodies, the baronetcy.

Furthermore, the respective Baron leads the dignity of a baronet, of the Navy, which was in 1814 awarded to Henry Blackwood, the seventh son of the first Baroness. He was Vice- Admiral of the Blue Flag in the Royal Navy.

More titles

Frederick Blackwood, the fifth Baron, was one of the most important diplomats and colonial officials of his time. He was raised in 1850 for Baron Clandeboye, of Clandeboye, County Down, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, so he got a seat in the House of Lords. In 1862 he added the name of his wife " commutes ", ten years later to his paternal grandmother " Temple " his nickname. 1871 was followed by the elevation to the Earl of Dufferin, County Down, with the subordinate title Viscount Claneboye, of Claneboye in County Down. 1888 finally had the title Marquess of Dufferin and Ava, awarded in County Down and in the province of Burma, and Earl of Ava, in the province of Burma. The other titles were all in the Peerage of the United Kingdom.

All these titles extinct in 1988 with the death of the fifth Marquess.
