Baron Masham

Baron Masham is a hereditary British title of nobility, which was awarded twice. The first ceremony took place in the Peerage of Great Britain, the two later in the Peerage of the United Kingdom.

Ceremonies

The title was the first time in 1712 at the courtier Samuel Masham. He became Baron Masham, of Otes levied. The title became extinct in 1776 with the death of the second Baron.

The second time it was created in 1891 for the industrialist Samuel Cunliffe Lister, who was elevated to Baron Masham of Swinton in the County of York. With the death of the third Baron Masham However, this award went out already in 1924.

The title was awarded again in 1955, this time as Baron Masham, of Ellington in the County of York, the politician Philip Cunliffe - Lister, who was appointed at the same time also to the Earl of Swinton. The respective Earl of Swinton leads the barony as a subsidiary title.

The wife of the second Earl, Susan Cunliffe - Lister was appointed a Life Peer in its own right in 1970. She received the title of Baroness Masham of Ilton.

There is an older, separate title Baron Scrope of Masham, who has been suspended since 1517 and the Scrope family belongs.
