Earl of Swinton

Earl of Swinton is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, named after the castle in Masham Swinton Park, North Yorkshire, which is supported by the family Cunliffe - Lister.

The castle, which was established in 2000 bought back by the family, is also the ancestral seat of the family. Previously, this was the nearby Dykes Hill House.

Award

The title was awarded in 1955 to the British Conservative politician Philip Cunliffe - Lister. This was from 1922 to 1955 held various ministerial posts in a total of eleven governments. Among other things, he was trade and colonial secretary.

Subordinate title

The subsidiary title of the Earl are Viscount Swinton, of Masham in the County of York (awarded 1935), and Baron Masham, of Ellington in the County of York (awarded 1955). The latter title is out of the title as a courtesy title heirs.

Another title of the family

The wife of the second Earl Susan Cunliffe - Lister was awarded a Life Peerage in 1970. The title was Baroness Masham of Ilton.
