Barraux

Barraux is a commune with 1879 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Isère, in the Rhône -Alpes; it belongs to the district of Grenoble and the District of Le Touvet.

Geography

Barraux is a municipality in the valley of Grésivaudan. The town center is 3 km away from Pontcharra, 22 km from Chambery and 35 km from Grenoble. Neighboring municipalities are: Sainte -Marie -du -Mont, La Buissière, La Flachère, Pontcharra and Chapareillan. Districts of Barraux are out of the town center, La Cuiller, Beauregard, La Frette, Le Fayet ( with the Château Le Fayet ) and La Gache

History

The Fort Barraux 1598 Lesdiguières removed from the Duke of Savoy, who had the fortress built in the year before. Vauban in 1692 ordered construction to reinforce the border with Savoy on. The work continued until 1770. 1793 the fort was converted into a prison. 1914-1918 there were Barraux in a POW camp for German officers, from 1941 an internment camp for Jews and Resistance fighters, which was continued after the war as a camp for black market dealers and existed until 1948.
