Bartolo Longo

Bartolo Longo ( born February 10, 1841 in Latiano at Brindisi; † October 5, 1926 in Pompei) was a Dominican Tertiary and founder of the Sanctuary of Blessed Virgin of the Rosary in Pompei. 1980 Pope John Paul II spoke his soul.

Life

Bartolo Longo was raised in a strict Catholic family. Through studies in Naples, he met with positivist currents ( Ernest Renan, Bertrando Spaventa ) and eventually became a " spiritualism - priest." After a severe crisis and health damage he found his way back to faith and became a member of the Third Order of the Dominicans, a kind of lay order, by which he re- discovered the rosary of his childhood and is also called Fratel Rosario ( "Brother Rosary ").

In 1873 he began in Pompeii, a town near the ancient Pompeii, with the rebuilding of a church and received in 1875 from Naples, an image of Our Lady of the Rosary, which he brought into the restored church. 1891, the enlarged church was consecrated. In 1939, the church was further extended and is now a basilica of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompei ( Santuario della Beata Vergine del Rosario di Pompei) known.

In 1885 he married Countess Mariana di Fusco. The two took care of orphans and children of prisoners, which was revolutionary at the time. In 1906 she gave the sanctuary of the Holy See. 1926 Bartolo Longo died at the age of 85 years. Pope John Paul II beatified him on 26 October 1980 as the " Apostle of the Rosary " and mentioned several times in his encyclical Rosarium Virginis Mariae Rosary 2002. The Memorial of Blessed is on October 5.

He was Grand Officer of the Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem.
