Bas Verwijlen

Bas Verwijlen ( born October 1, 1983 in Oss ) is a Dutch fencer.

In the World Fencing Championship in 2005 in Leipzig, he surprisingly won the bronze medal in men's singles. After defeating the Swiss Olympic champion Marcel Fischer in the quarterfinals, he had to be in the semifinals only slightly with 10:11 to eventual champion Pawel Kolobkov beaten. Verwijlen is by Hubert van Bleijenburgh 1906 only the second Dutchman, who was able to win a medal at World Fencing Championships.

At the 2008 Olympics in Beijing took Verwijlen in epee individual eighth place. In 2011 he won both the European Championships in Sheffield behind Jörg Fiedler as well as at the World Championships in Catania behind Paolo Pizzo each individual silver. In 2012 he again took part in the London Olympics and finished third in the individual thirteenth place.
