Basil Schott

Basil Myron Schott, OFM ( born September 21, 1939 in Freeland, Pennsylvania, † June 10, 2010 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) was a bishop of the Ruthenian Greek Catholic Eparchy of Parma and Archbishop of archeparchy Pittsburgh.

Life

Basil Myron Schott resigned after graduating from St. Gabriel High School in Hazleton when in 1958 the Congregation of the Franciscan ( Byzantine Franciscans ). In 1959, he made ​​his profession. He studied philosophy and theology at Immaculate Conception College in Troy and theology and pastoral ministry at St. Mary Seminary in Norwalk. On August 29, 1965 Basil Myron Schott was ordained a priest. He has held numerous positions in the Order; 1988, he worked on the staff of General of the United States.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on February 3, 1996 Bishop of the Eparchy of Parma. The episcopal ordination took place on 11 July of the same year by the Archbishop of Pittsburgh, Michael Judson Procyk; Co-consecrators were Andrew Pataki, Bishop of Passaic, and George Martin Kuzma, Bishop of Van Nuys. On 3 May 2002, he was Ruthenian Greek Catholic Archbishop of Pittsburgh and on 9 July 2002, he was introduced formally into office.

He was President of the Council of the Ruthenian Church in the United States. On March 7, 2009 he was beatified by Benedict XVI. appointed a member of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches. In the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops ( USCCB ), he was chairman of the Commission for Relations between the Orthodox and the Latin Church. He was also a member of the commission for the consecrated life, mission and chairman of the Commission for the region XV of the USCCB.

Basil Myron Schott died at UPMC Passavant Hospital in Pittsburgh from the consequences of a cancer suffering. He was buried in Mount St. Macrina in Uniontown.
