Basionym

The basionym (Greek βάσις, basic " foundation "; ὄνυμα, Anonyma "Name": original name ) is a term of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature ( ICBN ). A basionym is that a synonym of a valid scientific name, from which it is derived. A basionym can be the first valid scientific name under which a taxon was described, but that is not always the case ( see examples).

According to the rules of the ICBN is the author (or more precisely its author abbreviation ) of the Basionyms listed when changing the systematic classification of the taxon described in parentheses after the new name of the taxon followed by the author of the new, correct name. This method of double quote from author and the current author is used in botany and bacteriology both for transmission, for example, one species into another species, as well as for grades changes, for example where one originally described as a subspecies taxon species status is assigned or vice versa. The described practice allows, starting from the current naming a historical name combination to trace, despite renaming or transfer.

In zoological nomenclature, the term basionym other hand, is not used. He there corresponds roughly to the term " original spelling " (original spelling ).

Examples

Rank Change (status novus ): The basionym of Achillea millefolium L. subsp. sudetica ( Opiz ) White is Achillea sudetica Opiz. This taxon was first named by PM Opiz; White it degraded to the subspecies and awarded the new name.

The basionym is not necessarily the oldest valid name. Carl Linnaeus described the species in 1753 Adenanthera falcataria L. (1753 ). Depending on the processor type is assigned to one of two different genera:

  • For classification in the genus Paraserianthes the correct name Paraserianthes falcataria is (L.) IC Nielsen; Adenanthera falcataria L. (1753 ), the basionym.
  • For classification in the genus Falcataria the correct name is Falcataria moluccana ( Miq. ) Barneby & JW Grimes. In this case, Albizia moluccana Miq. (1855 ) the associated basionym, without being the oldest valid name. The use of Falcataria falcataria is not permitted ( Tautonym ).
