Island state

Basseterre (French for "Lower Land" ) is the capital of the island Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis in the Lesser Antilles. It lies on the southern coast of the island of St. Kitts and was founded by French colonists under the leadership of Pierre d' Belain Esnambuc in 1625 and was the first permanent French colony established in the Caribbean.

The population of Basseterre makes with about 13,000 inhabitants from more than a quarter of the entire state. In this city is the commercial center. In the city or in close proximity to two airports are (the larger is the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport ) and some sugar refineries.

The football club Garden Hotspurs FC comes from the city.
