Batken Province
The territory of Batken ( kirgis. Баткен областы; Russian Баткенская область ) is one of 7 regions ( oblast) of Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia. It is located in the extreme southwest of the country and is bounded on the north, south and west of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. The region has an area of 16,995 km ² and around 400,000 inhabitants. It lists at 1.1% one of the highest population growth rates in the country.
The administrative center of the region is the city of Batken. The area encompasses seven enclaves, some of which include Uzbekistan and Tajikistan others.
History
The area has only existed since 1999, when it was separated from the Osh region. Thus, it is the youngest region of Kyrgyzstan. During the civil war in neighboring Tajikistan, Muslim groups fight attracted partly deep into the mountains of the region, as the border is confusing and difficult to watch. In addition, here are the Hizb ut- Tahrir and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan is active, the neighboring Ferghana Valley has its stronghold.
Traffic
The area is traffic- inconveniently located amidst high mountains (foothills of the Pamir ), which separate it from the rest of the country. The only highway in the direction of Osh and Bishkek runs partly through Uzbek territory. The roads within the area run mostly by the enclaves of neighboring countries.
