Batonishvili

Batonischwili (Eng. son of the Lord ) was the noble title of princes and princesses of the Kingdom of Georgia. He was appended to the name instead of a surname. He was not only worn by the children of reigning kings, but also of the patrilineal descendants of former kings. The formal address of a Batonischwili was Uganatlebulesi (German Highness ).

There was in the Transcaucasian monarchies different varieties nobles, who possessed temporarily more or less sovereignty. After the translation of their titles in other languages , they are easily confused with the rank of Batonischwili. This is partly because there is no precise equivalent Western terms for the title and that the title bar many from the Russian language with the term Knjaz (English prince) to be translated.

The first named in the Contract Annex Georgian noble family was that of the Bagratides, which belonged to the Georgian kings and their male offspring. In Russia they were indiscriminately the title Knyaz and the rank of an ordinary nobleman (Russian Dworjanstwo ).

In Georgia, all members of the Bagratides Dynasty bore the title Batonischwili, regardless of whether they belonged to the family branch of Kartlier, Kachetier, Muchranier or Imeretier. Your descendants living in Russia was allowed on the Russian Imperial Court until 1833 to carry the royal title Tsarevich. After a failed coup to restore the Georgian monarchy, the heirs of the Georgian kings were downgraded to the level of a Knyaz and received the title of Prince Grusinski ( Prince of Georgia ) and Prince Imeretinski ( Prince of Imereti ).
