The Battle of Cirta was a battle between Numidians and Romans.

Prehistory

Syphax, the main ally of Carthage, had retired with his troops in the North African city of Cirta. Publius Cornelius Scipio sent two of his ablest men, Gaius Laelius and Masinissa for prosecution. This ended 203 BC in North Africa and marched immediately to the city of Cirta. Syphax hired mercenaries on his way and believed to be strong enough to face the Romans shortly before the city. It came to battle.

The Battle

It began with an attack by the Numidian cavalry, who had earlier won in the Second Punic War. Masinissa had his Velites hurl their javelins and then retreat behind the rows of Hastati. The two armies clashed and there arose a violent struggle of man against man. But the army of Syphax was mostly just from poorly trained mercenaries and subject to the well-drilled legionaries. When the Roman cavalry now even the Numidians was in the back, fled this. Syphax himself was captured, bringing the battle was decided.
