The Battle of Geronium was a battle between the Romans and Carthaginians in the fall of 217 BC during the Second Punic War.

Prehistory

After Hannibal had won the Battle of Ager Falernus, he marched with his army into Apulia. He suggested here on his winter quarters and wanted to start with further military actions until 216 BC again. Marcus Minucius Rufus and Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus, two Roman generals, saw in the area close to the Roman heartland camp of the Carthaginians a threat and thus gave two armies, each with 20,000 legionaries on to attack Hannibal from two sides and defeat a result. One autumn the two Roman parties attacked.

Course

The camp of Hannibal was on a hill, which meant that the Romans had to fight uphill, which the Carthaginians facilitated the defense. Marcus Minucius Rufus attacked the first of the north with his soldiers. The first wave of attack was successfully repulsed by the Carthaginians. Well, he tried it a second time, now hoping for cooperation with the coming of the South Fabius Maximus, but he let his forces too late storm against the Carthaginian camp. The battle lasted until the evening, without the walls of the defenders could be overcome. Finally, the Romans withdrew.

Follow

The battle was considered a tie, with Hannibal so far could carry a triumph when he had his camp successfully defended against the Romans. For the remainder of the war, this battle had less significance than the subsequent defeat of the Romans at the Battle of Cannae.
