The Battle of Kynossema was a naval battle during the Peloponnesian War, which was fought in 411 BC between Athens and Sparta.

The Peloponnesian fleet under Mindaros held initially at Miletus, where she the gain expected by the Confederate Phoenician fleet ( which was however stopped by the Athenians under Alcibiades ). With 73 ships to Mindaros then decided to sail to Chios. The Athenian fleet under Thrasyllos approached with 55 ships from Samos, it joined five ships under Thrasybulus and seven other allied ships. Meanwhile left Mindaros Chios, where he was able to strengthen its fleet with ships from Abydos, so that it now had 86 ships. He managed to defeat 18 Athenian ships which had come from Sestos. The rest of the Athenian fleet, which now consisted of 76 ships, turned towards the Hellespont. There the Peloponnesian ships set up in battle formation, with the Spartan ships on the left, and the Syracusan allies were stationed on the right wing. In the Athenian fleet Thrasyllos commanded the right and the left wing of Thrasybulus. Before the promontory of Kynossema ( on the European shore of the Hellespont located ) came it then to battle. First, it succeeded the Spartans to break through in the middle of the Athenian lines. The Spartans believed that they had already secured the victory, but succeeded Thrasybulos to order his ships again, so that he could defeat the Spartans who no longer went in battle array. The Spartans had to retire then, they were followed by the Syracusans. Although the Athenians had lost 15 ships and escaped the enemy fleet to Abydos was the battle as a victory of the Athenian fleet, as they could get away with 21 ships of the enemy.

This victory meant that the recently installed in Athens oligarchy overthrown and democracy was restored.

After the Byzantine Suda should be drowned in the sea battle of Kynossema the Attic comic poet Eupolis.
