Battle of Winterthur (1799)

In the Battle of Winterthur on 27 May 1799 during the Second Coalition war against revolutionary France, Austrian troops defeated a French army at Winterthur in Switzerland. The battle was a prelude to the First Battle of Zurich.

Lieutenant Field Marshal Friedrich von Hotze had received the command of the 23,000 -strong Austrian troops in Vorarlberg and Grisons during re outbreak of hostilities in March 1799. There he found himself immediately in fighting against French troops under General André Masséna, which has been appointed by the Board of France commander of the " Swiss Army", intricate, in which he and his soldiers proved themselves. After they had initially defended Feldkirch in March, they conquered on May 14, 1799 back the fortified Luziensteig.

Hotze sat in and went along with Archduke Charles ( who intervened only towards the end of the battle ), the commander of the Austrian armies in southern Germany, northern Italy and Switzerland, offensively against Masséna ago. On May 27, they struck a part of the troops of Masséna under the leadership of Michel Ney at Winterthur and forced him to retreat to Zurich.

A few days later, on June 4 to 7 in 1799 defeated the two Masséna in the First Battle of Zurich once again. Masséna was forced to leave the city and the Austrians to retreat behind the River Limmat.
