Bayamón (El Pueblo del Chicharrón ) is a city in the north of Puerto Rico.

History

The city is sometimes provided with the nickname El Pueblo del Chicharrón (, village of pork rind '). Juan Ramírez de Bayamón Arrellano awarded on May 22, 1772 city rights. The name derives from alleged by a local Indian chief named Bahamon; other claims to the name of the Taino word Bayamongo is derived the name of a river that flows through the city.

Bayamón is one of the largest cities in Puerto Rico. It is located in one of five metropolitan areas of the island. It is divided into the districts of Buena Vista, Cerro Gordo, Dajaos, Guaraguao Arriba, Arriba Guaraguao, Hato Tejas, Juan Sánchez, Minillas, Nuevo, Pájaros, Pueblo and Santa Olaya.

A special feature is the town hall which leads across a street. At the point the bottom is transparent, so that visitors can see below the vehicles.

In Bayamón since 2003, runs a train ( Tren Urbano ). In addition, another train runs in the park Trensito.

The city is the seat of three universities:

  • Universidad Central de Bayamón ( UCB)
  • American University
  • National College

Known Bayamónesen are Francisco Oller, The Mars Volta guitarist Omar Alfredo Rodriguez- Lopez, Chuito de Bayamón and boxing champion Hector " Macho" Camacho, Daniel Santos and Orlando Maldonado.
