Bayla

Region

Bandarbeyla ( Somali: Bandar Beyla, Bender Bayla, side dishes Bender, Bender Beyla or even Beyla ) is a small town in northeastern Somalia, in the region of Bari. It lies on the Horn of Africa on the coast of the Indian Ocean and has about 3,400 residents, mostly from the Somali clan of the Darod Majerteen.

History

Its present boundaries of the district received in 1962 as the Somali President Abdirashid Ali Shermarke, who was born in Bandarbayla. After the outbreak of the Somali Civil War and the progressive disintegration of the political order in Somalia, Bandarbeyla served for some time as a base for pirates. Due to the tsunami that followed the earthquake in the Indian Ocean in 2004, the city was hit hard. According to the population, the tsunami destroyed about 60 boats and 100 families were left homeless.

Economy and infrastructure

Today the settlement with more rural character lives mainly from fishing. To a lesser extent, by trade with Yemen, which can be reached by boat on the Arabian Sea. As administrative headquarters of the district of the same Bandarbeyla has a medical center, which was opened with the support of UNHCR and the children's rights organization Save the Children in 2006.
