Beckington Castle is a historic home in the village of Beckington in Somerset, England. The building is classified as a Listed Building in the Grade II *.

It was built in the early 17th century on the site of a medieval building and was the residence of various dignitaries and also served as a school and a hotel. Today it is used as an office building.

History

The building was at the beginning of the 17th century, built on the site of an earlier medieval building of William Long, a draper and founder of the Church of St George. In 1569 his son Thomas lived here. Sometime before 1616 it was, 1st Earl of Marlborough sold to James Ley.

Several local merchants owned the house during the 18th century, about Christopher Brewer, Samuel Love and Nathaniel Mortimer. In the 1780s Beckington Castle came into the possession of the Chislett family who kept it until 1870. For the first time in 1839, the term " Castle House " was applied to the house. It later became " The Castle " and finally " Beckington Castle". 1870 George Esdaile bought the property for 450 pounds sterling. The next owner was the Colonel Augustus Hill, it was which owns 1896-1901.

Edward Milles Nelson was 1902-1926 owner of the house. Nelson was President of the Royal Microscopical Society and author of The Cult of Circle Builders. After that, it was the home of Captain Hamilton of the Coldstream Guards, which was created for the 3rd Baron Hamilton of Dalzell later. 1942 is his son, the politician Archie Hamilton, Baron Hamilton of Epsom was born.

The property also served as a hotel and as a showroom for antiques. From 1945 to 1970, it was used by the Ravenscroft School. When, in February 1966 in the boiler room of the building a fire broke out, most of the interior was destroyed. The school was closed for a week and then put into operation in the outbuildings on until the damage was eliminated.

Beckington Castle was bought in 1989 in a poor state of Systems Engineering & Assessment Ltd ( SEA); this company granted the MoD support in technical matters and in procurement. 1995 and 1996 Beckington Castle was renovated with the support of the city administration and by English Heritage and has since then served SEA as their headquarters.

The building is reputed to be haunted in him. It was perhaps the first estate in England, which was touted in a sales display with this feature. 2007, a study was carried out on paranormal activity.

Architecture

The three-storey building has three high gables with gable wall tops and tabs on the front and two similar side gables on each side.
