Békés County
Békés [be ː ke ː ʃ ] is a county (administrative district ) in south-eastern Hungary. It borders on Romania, as well as the counties Csongrád, Jasz -Nagykun -Szolnok and Hajdú- Bihar. It has an area of 5631 km ² and (2001) 399 302 inhabitants. The county seat is Békéscsaba, other major cities are Békés Orosháza, Szarvas and Gyula.

The county, in its present form emerged in the wake of Komitatsreform in 1950, got its name from a previously under the same name but existing in smaller limits county, see Békés County ( historically ).
