The Malinois (also Mechelaar after the Belgian city of Mechelen) is a variety of the Belgian Shepherd, a recognized Belgian breed (FCI Group 1, Section 1, Standard No. 15).

History

A dog of this type occurred the first time around the year 1899. The name derives from the town of Malines or Mechlin in the Flemish-speaking region of Belgium. Very soon towered over the Malinois as working dogs all other variants of the Belgian Shepherd.

Appearance

The Malinois (pronounced Malinu -a) also Mechelaar or in the vernacular of many dog breeders Mali or Malli, is the short-haired version of the Belgian Shepherd.

The Malinois is a dog without exaggeration, that is, his exterior is simple, goal-oriented and ready for use. It differs from the other varieties of the Belgian Shepherd only by its coat color and texture. All other exterior features will be the same for all Belgian Shepherds.

In general, the Malinois is fawn with black mask and black overlay ( Charbonnage ). In reality, the appearance of very bright, sand-colored fur varies over reddish brown to dark brown gray. Lack of undercoat is considered an error in relation to the breed standard.

Nature

Originally bred as guard and herding dog, the Malinois has quickly established itself as a service and sporting dog. Especially in his country of origin Belgium, the Netherlands and France, he was always selected for his "inner" properties; his appearance was secondary. He is about as large as the German Shepherd, but less bulky, faster, more agile and responsive. He is learning and eager to work, which places high demands on the respective handler during his training. In character finds dogs within a wide scale from " very timid and shy " about " well socialized and people friendly " " to treat aggressively and with caution " to. However, in the breed standard fearful and aggressive dogs are not up to standard as described ( eliminating fault ).

Use

The Malinois is as demanding domestic dog just as suitable as a sport dog, companion dog as well as a service dog for police, gendarmerie, military and customs, where he is currently widespread. In the executive branch, there are training opportunities for protection, tracks and flushing dog ( Browse by persons and objects ) and a supplementary training (dual use ) as a drug sniffer dog, fire investigation, explosives, corpses and blood tracer - as well as avalanches and avalanche dog.
