Bely Island

Bely (Russian Белый остров / Bely Ostrov, " White Island " ) is an island in the Kara Sea north of the Yamal Peninsula in northwestern Siberia (Russia).

The area of ​​the island is about 1900 km ², the east-west and north - south extension approximately 50 kilometers. From the mainland, the Yamal Peninsula, it is separated from the at the narrowest point about 8 km wide Malyginstraße. The coast is predominantly poorly indented, only in the southwest ( Pacha Bay ) and east ( Njabipachabucht ) intersect isolated bays deep. Bely are mainly in the east and southeast upstream several small islands; the largest is Besymjanny ( " The Nameless ") in the Njabipachabucht. Administratively, the island is part of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District. There are no permanently inhabited villages. There is a weather station that Popov station on the west coast.
