Benedict Arnold (congressman)

Benedict Arnold ( born October 5, 1780 in Amsterdam, New York, † March 3, 1849 ) was an American politician. Between 1829 and 1831 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives. Congressman Matthias J. Bovee was his brother in law.

Career

Benedict Arnold was born during the War of Independence in Amsterdam in Montgomery County and grew up there. During this time he attended community schools. He then went to commercial transactions, but was also a large-scale landowners and philanthropist. Between 1813 and 1816 he held the post of Supervisor of Amsterdam. He sat in the years 1816 and 1817 in the New York State Assembly.

As a result of fragmentation of the Democratic-Republican Party before and during the presidency of John Quincy Adams (1825-1829), he joined the anti - Jacksonian Group. In the congressional elections of 1828 for the 21th Congress Arnold was in the 16th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Henry Markell on March 4, 1829. Since he gave up for reelection in 1830, he retired after March 3, 1831 from the Congress.

In 1832 he was president of the Board of Trustees of the Village of Amsterdam. He no longer pursued its previous transactions, retired and lived until his death on March 3, 1849 in Amsterdam. His body was buried in the Green Hill Cemetery.
