Benedikt Niese

Jürgen Anton Benedikt ( Benedictus ) Niese (* November 24, 1849 in Burg auf Fehmarn, Holstein, † February 1, 1910 in Halle) was a German classical philologist and historian.

His father was Emil August Niese (1816-1869), pastor in the then Danish Burg on Fehmarn and later seminar director in Eckernförde. His mother Marie Benedicte Niese was born Matthiessen. The writer Charlotte Niese was his sister.

After studying history and classical philology in Kiel and Bonn, where he graduated in 1872 with a doctorate in Kiel, put Niese 1873 teaching certificate, but kept from autumn 1873 to early 1876 in Italy and Paris. In 1876 he completed his habilitation in Göttingen and became an associate in the following year, 1880 Associate Professor of Ancient History and Classical Studies in Marburg. In 1881 he accepted an appointment as professor of classical philology in Breslau, but returned back in 1885 after the departure Eugen Bormann to Marburg, where he was Dean of the Faculty of Arts in 1890 and 1901 Rector. On Winckelmannstag 1899 he was appointed a full member of the German Archaeological Institute. From 1906 until his death he was to succeed Ulrich Wilcken Professor of Ancient History in Halle.

Niese dealt with both philological subjects ( Homer, edition of Flavius ​​Josephus ) as well as with the Greek and Roman history. In the classical studies he worked on the manual originally written by Robert Pöhlmann outline of Roman history in third (1906 ) and 4th edition (1910).
