Beninese presidential election, 1991

The presidential elections in Benin in March 1991 was the first presidential election in the West African state of Benin since 1970 and - after a constitutional referendum last year - the first free elections since the seizure of power and the introduction of a Marxist- Leninist party system by Mathieu Kérékou 1972 In the first round on 10. In the second round on March 24, only joined the two highest ranked, Nicéphore Soglo and ex-dictator Mathieu Kérékou, against each other. While Kérékou able to increase its share of the vote by only a few percent, Soglo doubled its share of the vote compared to the first round and was almost clear winner with more than two -thirds of all votes cast. The turnout was 56.3 % in the first round and once again significantly increased 64.1 % in the second round.

These elections were the first in francophone Africa, where an opposition candidate in a free election replaced a ruling president.
