Benno Moiseiwitsch

Benno Moiseiwitsch (originally Russian Бенно Моисеевич / Benno Moissejewitsch; born February 22, 1890 in Odessa, Ukraine, † April 9, 1963 in London, England) was a Russian pianist.

Life

Moiseiwitsch began at the age of 7 years at the Music Academy Odessa to play the piano. He was taught by Dmitri Klimov and already at age 9, he won the Anton Rubinstein Prize. In the period 1904-1908 he studied with Teodor Leszetycki in Vienna.

His first public appearance was Moiseiwitsch 1909 in London and settled at that time in England down. In 1937 he took on British citizenship.

Benno Moiseiwitsch was married to the Australian concert violinist Daisy Kennedy.

Moiseiwitschs game is characterized by great elegance, refinement and naturalness. His excellent technique sounds very easily. Rachmaninoff saw in him his artistic heirs.

Moiseiwitsch was able to talk with the composer about the importance of his Preludes. He received important advice on the interpretation of the gloomy Prelude Op 32 No 10 in B Minor, which was the highlight of the collection for Rachmaninoff. The composer drew attention in a lengthy discussion on the subject of "return" to the homeland Russia.
