Benny Begin

Ze'ev Binyamin " Benny " Begin; Height: זאב בנימין " בני " בגין, . ( Born March 1, 1943 in Jerusalem) is an Israeli politician of the Likud.

Family

He was born the son of Menachem Begin and his wife Aliza Arnold (1939-1982) in Jerusalem. His sisters are Hasia Begin and Leah Begin.

Career

He studied Geology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. After graduation he worked for the Geological Survey of Israel. At Colorado State University, he did his PhD in geology in 1978.

In 1988 he was a member of the Likud in the Knesset, in 1993 he was Yitzhak Shamir follow as party chairman of the Likud, but was defeated by Benjamin Netanyahu. Under Netanyahu's government (1996-1999) he was on June 18, 1996 to January 16, 1997 Minister of Science, Culture and Sport. But in 1997 he left in protest of the Hebron Protocol office. He wanted the party Herut, which had been founded by his father revive. With the support of Yitzhak Shamir, he founded Herut - HaTnu'a HaLeumit and followed other Israeli parties, just as he opposed the Oslo peace process and the division of the city of Hebron; they went into the National Union. However, the party was unsuccessful in the Knesset elections in 2003 and 2006 not even the 2 % threshold, so that Begin before the Knesset in 2009 with his colleagues again returned to the Likud.
