Bensonhurst, Brooklyn
Bensonhurst is a neighborhood located in the southwestern part of New York City in Brooklyn.
Geography
Bensonhurst is in the southeast of Gravesend by Midwood to the east, by Borough Park to the north, Dyker Heights by Bath Beach bounded on the southwest and the west.
History
Bensonhurst derives its name from Arthur W. Benson. This was a former president of Brooklyn Gas, and began in 1835 farmlands of Polhemus to buy family.
Demography
In the early 20th century was the fourth target poor Jewish and Italian immigrants. Until the Second World War the division between Jewish and Italian Americans was about 50-50. In the 1950s, the demographic composition and more southern Italian immigrants transformed came to Bensonhurst. This meant that more and more Jews left this district. Bensonhurst was the " Little Italy " of Brooklyn. The 18th Avenue is one of the main shopping area and includes a number of small Italian family businesses that have been several generations of family ownership.
Since 2000, Chinese, Albanians, Arabs, Mexicans and residents of the former Soviet Union immigrated.
The opening of Chinese shops emerged in some streets of the impression of a miniature Chinatowns.
