Berberian Sound Studio is a British psychological thriller from director Peter Strickland from 2012. He was premiered on 28 June at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and had its premiere in Germany on 25 November at the Phantastival in Bremen.

Action

The plot of the movie takes place in an Italian studio of the 1970s called Berberian Sound Studio, set to music in the predominantly horror movies. The well-known British engineer Gilderoy ( Toby Jones), who has become an expert in nature documentaries a name to cooperate in its latest giallo film, at the invitation of the Italian director Santini. Here, the shy and sensitive Gilderoy encounters not only on language and cultural barriers. The strenuous work in the unfamiliar genre for him disturbed him visibly, so that he finally can hardly distinguish between reality and fiction.

Background

Strickland wanted to Berberian Sound Studio shoot a film in which mechanisms of film production are visible, which usually remain hidden to the viewer. So playing a large part of the plot in a confined studio and shows only the protagonists, as he produced the sound effects. Scenes of horror films, which he set to music, the audience does not see. This method produces the particular voltage of the film.

The film, set to music the studio Gilderoy ( Toby Jones) in Berberian Sound, is regarded as homage to the Giallo film, a specific Italian subgenre of the thriller and progenitor of the American Slasherfilms.

The soundtrack is complete by the British electronic band Broadcast, and was published under the title Berberian Sound Studio OST. With Roj Stevens of broadcast Strickland had already collaborated with his first work Katalin Varga.

In the credits, the English actress Suzy Kendall as a special guest called screamer. Kendall played in one of the style-defining films of the Giallo genre, The Mystery of the Crystal Plumage (L' Uccello dalle piume di cristallo, 1970), the female lead.
