Bern is a village in Nemaha County in the U.S. state of Kansas. In the village live 204 inhabitants. The population density is 597.8 inhabitants / km ².

Geography

Bern is located in northern Kansas near the border with the state of Nebraska in the Rolling Hills. Bern is located 107 km north of Topeka, about 135 km north- west of Kansas City, 122 km south-east of Lincoln and about 143 km south of Omaha. Bern has an area of 0.7 km ², of which 0 km ² water surface.

History

The first settlers of the county were five Swiss families. They were called meshing, Blue, Minger, Lehman and Spring. They came in 1854 and 1855 in the County. They were the first, who farmed the land around Bern. Bern was founded during the winter 1886/1887 at the newly constructed Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railroad of Colonel Henry Baker. On April 3, 1887, the first train ran in Bern on January 25, 1967, the last.
