Bernalillo is a town in Sandoval County in the U.S. state of New Mexico in the United States with 6611 inhabitants ( 2000). Bernalillo is also the county seat ( county seat ).

Geography

The city is located on the Historic Route 66 at the foot of the Sandia Mountains to the south of the county, in northwest New Mexico and has a total area of 12.2 km ², of which 0.3 km ² water surface.

History

As early as 1620, the area was settled by Spaniards and used principally for growing grapes. Through the city's historic Camino Real de Tierra Adentro leads ( then part of the area on New Spain ), of Mexico City and Santa Fe joined together. 1948 Bernalillo got city rights and was the county seat. Was named the place for a family Bernal, one of the first settlers in this area.

Events

Every year on the first Saturday in September, the New Mexico Wine Festival is held.

Demography

According to the census of 2000, there were 6,611 people in 2,309 households and 1,724 families. The population density was 555 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 60.17 % White, 0.74 % African American, 3.92 % Native American, 0.20 % Asian, and other groups.

Of the 2,309 households out of which 40.8 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 49.1 % were married couples living together, 18.6 % had a female householder with no husband, and 25.3% were non-families, 20.2 % of all households are made up and in 6.9 % have someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.30 persons.

In relation to the entire town the population was spread out with 31.0 % under the age of 18, 9.9 % from 18 to 24, 28.5% between 25 and 44 years, 21.4% between 45 and 64 years and 9.2% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.4 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 30,864, and the median income for a family was $ 36,286. Males have a median income of $ 27,417, women $ 22,125. The per capita income was $ 13,100. 13.9 % of families and 18.2 % of the population were below the poverty line.
