Bernard Malamud

Bernard Malamud ( born April 26, 1914 in Brooklyn, New York City; † March 18, 1986 ) was an American writer.

Life

Malamud was born the son of Russian Jewish immigrants. Its origin was in the subjects of his stories reflected that represent a modern interpretation of the famous Jewish literature from the schlemiel - type, the - innocent suffering - an unlucky person of humble origin, whose moral greatness but just reflects it.

After completing his school education, he studied at the City College of New York and at the city's Columbia University; then he worked as a government employee and taught in evening classes. From 1949 to 1961 he taught English at Oregon State University, since 1961 at Bennington College in Bennington (Vermont ) literature and linguistics and creative writing.

Only in the late 1940s he began to write; first short stories and later novels. To this end, he traveled to Europe and Asia, the Soviet Union and Israel. He wrote many short stories and several novels devoted himself mainly to New York City with Jewish terms. His most famous novel, The Fixer ( stimulated by the Beilis trial ) won the 1966 National Book Award and the 1967 Pulitzer Prize in the category of fiction. Malamud 's novel " The Natural" was the inspiration for the film The Natural with Robert Redford in the lead role.

From 1979 to 1981 Bernard Malamud served as president of the American PEN Club. He died of a heart attack in 1986.
